Aloha Members,

Club qualification beyond Sailing 101 and sailing Sunfish/Walker Bay/Hobie Ones requires completion of our three Study Guides and their exams, knots plus checkout rides on each of the larger boats.

Each Friday from 6-9 PM we are offering classes at UHH to complete the Study Guides, knots and take exams. Meet at classroom UCB 103 at 6PM this coming Friday evening the 14th to get started. Thank you Professor Garry for arranging use of the classroom for free. There will be a $3 per person charge for each session to cover the cost of administration (paper, training aids, etc.).

Take Kawili St. to the big parking lot. At the upper end of the parking lot near the guard shack and bus stop there is a tall building. Wander around to find the classroom. We'll cover navigation too!

So far we have completed the three study guides and given exams for all three. The next session will cover knots and video instruction concerning subjects in our study guides. You can challange the class by just taking the exams or sit in on the classes and take exams when you feel you are ready. There is no requirement that you take the classes in any sort of sequence and there is no guarantee that the classes will be offered forever so you might want to start now. The study guides are readable and downloadable on our website: www.hilo-sailing.org or can be purchased during class for $2 each.

See you in class.

Update Aug 2008 - Classes are on hold at the moment. We hope to run more classes at some point in the future depending on interest.

We had 12 brave souls show for our first in a series of classes using our new study guides. Classes were held at UCB 103, UHH Campus on Friday. Thanks Professor Robert Garry for the classroom. We will continue with classes from 6-9 PM each Friday until we complete the cycle of the major three study guides that you can now find easily on the website www.hilo-sailing.org under the members area plus knots, plus navigation. Those who have renewed membership will know the combination required for the password to access the study guides which is the same as is for the lockers and small boats on the beach. If you need the combination - call a board member.

Although there will be study guides available at the class for $2 each it is adviseable and maybe less costly for you to download a copy and start studying now. All exams will be given each of the Friday nights. Paul Hirst took exams for two and passed those two with high scores. Another of our students took all three exams and was just one correct answer shy of passing all three exams. That is phenominal. The exam for Parts of Our Boat was administered and several students were able to get 90% grades which is considered passing. Three of those who passed had scores just one correct answer shy of a perfect score. Good job!!

Next Friday's class will be focusing on Sailing Theory. That will be November 23rd, 6-9 PM. UCB Building 103 UHH Campus. There will be a $3 administrative/training aid fee for each of the classes.

Hope to see you there.
We've just moved to new web servers. This will give us lots more flexibility with our internet presence...

I've also updated the site a little. This news / events blog is one such update. Also John's sailing study guides are now available in the members section.

Happy sailing surfing, as it were....
